As Downton Abbey’s third season gets under way in the U.S., Michelle Dockery—whose beauty and intelligence have made Lady Mary Crawley so transfixing—sits for illustrator David Downton, and Laura Jacobs gets impressions from both.

It’s all in the gaze. “She thinks before she speaks,” says actress Michelle Dockery of Lady Mary Crawley, the character she plays on Masterpiece’s hit series Downton Abbey. “From the get-go Mary has always been someone who thinks.” The same can be said of Dockery, who recently spent an afternoon at Claridge’s in London with the celebrated illustrator David Downton, master of the light touch that goes deep. “The sense I had of Michelle,” says Downton, “is of somebody that is very intelligent and very ‘watchful’ … no, ‘watchful’ is the wrong word. She’s alive to life, to what’s going on.”

For three hours the artist sketched, the actress wore Givenchy and Balenciaga and Oscar de la Renta, and the two “Downtons” talked while a face was captured. Regal in the cheekbones, between-the-wars in her aloof beauty and that arched eyebrow, it’s a face that can go icy in an instant or warm like the dawn. “She has that thing of being classic and contemporary,” explains Downton, “that very strange mix where she looks at home, at ease, in period. But there’s also a glimmer, a spark.”

That glimmer and spark was recently brought to the Sundance Channel’s Restless, in which Dockery played the daughter of a W.W. II spy. Due out in 2013 is the airborne thriller Non-Stop, with Dockery starring alongside Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore.

“She’s worked. She’s 30. She’s ready,” says Downton. “There’s a sense with her of ‘Isn’t this great? This is a golden hour!’ And I love that in a person, when they know.”

“I do know,” says Dockery. “And I relish it as much as I can. I’ve never been someone who expects too much, I guess to avoid the disappointment. And I know it will end at some point. So I try not to let anything dampen how amazing it all really is.” This moment, her likeness, in the air.

Michelle Dockery
Lady Mary Crawley

What do you and Lady Mary have most in common?
She’s a very sensitive person underneath this cold exterior. I can sometimes relate to that strength she has on the outside. But we’re quite different in many ways.

How so?
I am, maybe, not quite as blunt as she is.

What frustrates you the most about her?
I think just her meanness toward Edith. I think if I were a friend of Edith’s, I’d stick up for her.

Why doesn’t Lady Mary have more dresses?
I think she has plenty. The amount of changes we do every day—she couldn’t possibly have any more! That would be really greedy. In the second series, we didn’t have quite so many changes because the war was on and it seemed inappropriate. But for the third series, there’s slightly more glamour; the war is over, the diamonds are out. —Katie Van Syckle

They may be too young to be fans yet of either Doctor Who or Downton Abbey but pint-size viewers of the Disney Junior channel will soon get their first exposure to Matt Smith and Michelle Dockery.

The two British TV stars – Smith is on Doctor Who and Dockery in Downton Abbey – are among the celebrities who’ve signed on to narrate poems as part of Disney Junior’s “A Poem Is … “ series.

Smith will make his debut – he’ll be heard reading while animated clips from various Disney cartoons appear on the screen – with “De Colores,” a traditional folk song, this Saturday, January 5 at 8:55 a.m. On January 19 at 7:55 a.m., he’ll read “Once They All Believed in Dragons” by Jack Prelutsky.

Michelle Dockery will read “It’s a Pleasant Day” by Eliza Lee Cabot Follen this Sunday, January 6 at 8:55 a.m. (Her reading of “Pleasant Day” aired previously on Disney Junior in the U.K.) Downton fans might want to consider her presentation an appetizer before they feast on watching her as Lady Mary Crawley in the first episode of season three of the popular period drama later that evening on PBS.

All is quiet in Dockers-world. However, the IMDB page for Non-Stop has been updated, which now includes Michelle’s role in the film. Michelle will be playing the role of Nancy in the film. Unfortunately, I don’t have any other information other than that, but still nice to know Michelle’s role now!

After three successful series and two Christmas editions of Downton Abbey, Dan Stevens decided not to renew his contract beyond the initial three years he had been contracted.

We wish him every success for the future. Michelle Dockery will be returning to her role as Lady Mary in series four which begins production in February.

Over the last three years, audiences across the world have been captivated by the ups and downs of Mary and Matthew’s relationship, culminating in their wedding.

Fans have enjoyed what has become a solid and loving marriage. It is for this reason that the Producers decided Matthew and Mary could not simply be estranged or parted, resulting in his untimely and tragic death at the end of the Christmas episode.

In the next series, alongside all the usual drama, comedy and romance involving the much loved cast of characters, viewers will see Mary adjusting to her life and attempting to move on without the man she loved.
