Um, spoiler! But, it had already been leaked that Matthew and Mary would be married in Season 3. The Mirror’s Nicola Methven sat down with Michelle to discuss her on-screen wedding!

The wedding dress is the best-kept secret since Kate Middleton and her mum popped into Alexander McQueen’s studio.

But after two series of will-they-won’t-they, Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley will get their big day.

And Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, says it made her start thinking about marriage for real.

Michelle, 30, says: “I felt a bit like Kate Middleton with all the security, but we didn’t want people seeing the dress before the day. I’d never worn a wedding dress – I’ve never filmed an on-screen wedding before. I loved it.

“It’s a truly stunning dress and I’m sure people will make some comparisons with the royal wedding. As we arrived at the church and stepped out of the carriage the crowds were just amazing, with all these supporting artists cheering us on.”

The actress, who lives with her architect boyfriend of three years in London’s trendy Clerkenwell, added: “It felt strange, you get those nerves. It did make me think a little bit about what it would be like to be a bride.”

The details of the much-anticipated wedding were so secret even Michelle’s mother was kept in the dark.

She said: “My mum doesn’t know we get married this time.

“We have to keep storylines from friends and family, and that is hard sometimes. But also I don’t want to spoil it for them because they watch it as fans.”

You may recall that we reported Michelle’s brief appearance in Laura Brown’s new YouTube show “The Look”. Michelle is the star of Episode 6, “Michelle Dockery on Lady Mary.”

British dramas rarely make for international sensations, but Downton Abbey bucked that rep and became a must-see show for two seasons straight. Downton-devotees hold a special place in their hearts for a certain lady of the manor with a rebel streak. In episode 6 of “The Look” Laura Brown sits down with the girl behind the Abbey, Michelle Dockery.

Michelle is featured in Harper Bazaar’s September 2012 issue, which features a breathtaking new photoshoot by Benjamin A. Huseby, a full feature article and a behind the scenes video!

Downton’s Lady Mary

Michelle Dockery is sitting in an over-the-top hotel restaurant in the Hampshire countryside, so chosen for its proximity to Highclere Castle, where Downton Abbey is filmed. She is staring at a sliver of lemon sole covered in foam and delivered with swishy, unironic circumstance. It’s the most Lady Mary meal ever—and yet?… “God,” she says between giggles. “Should we order some potato?” She sips a glass of red wine and muses on the endless imbibing of the aristocratic Crawley family. “Sometimes during filming I’ll think, No, I’m not going to have a brandy because I just finished my glass of wine at the table.” After all, how is Mary supposed to be imperious when she’s inebriated? “Exactly!”

As might be expected by anyone in modern society, there is not a whole lot of Lady Mary in Dockery, who plays the haughty heroine of the obsessed-over period drama. She does have a superb speaking voice (originally from Essex, she credits drama school at 19 for “poshing you up quick”) and posture that would make a mother proud. But that’s about it. The most Lady Mary thing Dockery has done to date is wear a fascinator to the Epsom Derby last year. “They are not fascinating,” she observes of the first, and likely last, time she will ever wear one. Today she’s in the cool-girl off-duty uniform: a navy-and-white-striped T-shirt and jeans, her hair still in slight kinks from a marcel wave. (It’s now 1920 at Downton.)

Dockery, 30, was cast in Downton after her winning turn as Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion on London’s West End, following a few years spent in television dramas. “Until then I’d played much more vulnerable parts, but I remember coming out of the audition, and Dan Stevens [who plays Mary’s handsome love interest, Matthew, and with whom Dockery previously appeared in the TV movie The Turn of the Screw] was in the waiting room. I said, ‘Who are you up for?’ and he said, ‘Matthew.’ She laughs. “I walked out and thought, Oh, that could work.”
